Once a slave, rescued by a British cruiser from a slave ship and landed in Bombay. 1854, at Indo-British Institution under the care of the Rev. G. Candy (see Semler, Ishmael Michael and No. 411, List I). 1859, at Robert Money School. 1861, to Sharanpur, Nasik, to learn the trade of a blacksmith. 1864, to Mombasa, East Africa, to join Mr. Rebmann. 1865, Kisulitini. 1867, Universities’ Mission at Zanzibar. 1869, to Church Missionary Society Mission at Rabai. 1871, to Bombay, where he was engaged seeking and sending out African men and women to join the Frere Town colony. 1874-78, at Frere Town and Rabai. 1878, to Bombay. 1881, left India to join the Africa Mission. 1885, May 31, ordained a deacon by Bishop Hannington; 1895, January 20, ordained a priest by Bishop Tucker. 1885, Pastor at Kisulutini, East Equatorial Africa; July 22, started with Bishop Hannington on his journey to the Victoria Nyanza. In 1893 paid a short visit to Bombay.
