Byantuyo, Satulo

[TESO,  Muganda]

Satulo Byantuyo was educated at Budo. In 1914 he arrived in Teso, where he had already worked for a while previously, to be headmaster of Ngora High School.[1] He was a very good teacher who worked hard, was friendly with the Iteso, and did much to “uplift” the school.[2] After some years he returned to Buganda, but in 1948 he came back to Teso on a prolonged visit, staying at Kyere, and with Yakobo Okwerede and Archdeacon Odiit. He did not finally return to Buganda until 1963.[3]

This biography, written by Louise Pirouet, was included in “Appendix A: Biographical Notes,” on page 383 of “The Expansion of the Church of Uganda (N.A.C.) from Buganda into Northern and Western Uganda between 1891 and 1914, with Special Reference to the work of African Teachers and Evangelists” (PhD Thesis: University of East Africa, 1968). Pirouet published this thesis as Black Evangelists (London: Rex Collings, 1978). However, Black Evangelists does not reproduce the detailed biographies, complete with references to sources, found in Appendix A of the thesis.
