Edward

? Anglican Communion
Zimbabwe

Edward was one of the indigenous individuals who accompanied Bishop George Wyndham Hamilton Knight-Bruce upon his arrival in the newly established Anglican Diocese of Mashonaland in 1891. The Bishop recognized the crucial role that local people would play in the evangelization of their own communities. Edward served as the Bishop’s personal attendant and remained devoted to his service until his retirement, which was prompted by illness. Although his contributions went largely unrecorded by the Bishop, Edward exercised a significant ministry among the local population. As a person of mixed race, he was more culturally and relationally connected to the African communities than the Bishop, who was a foreigner to many who had never encountered a European before.
