Hatendi, Stephen
Stephen Hatendi was born in 1899 in Rusape and baptized in 1904. Two years later, in 1906, he was confirmed. As a native of Rusape, he represents the second generation of ordained indigenous clergy in the Anglican Diocese of Mashonaland. Hatendi received his early education at Epiphany Mission, where he was further nurtured in the Anglican tradition. In 1916, he became a catechist, serving both at Epiphany Mission and in nearby villages. He was later selected by Bishop Hicks Beaven to pursue theological training at St Augustine’s Mission. Hatendi began his ordination training in 1921 and completed it in December 1922. He was ordained as a deacon in 1923. After his ordination to the priesthood, he served as Assistant Priest to Canon Edgar Lloyd at St Faith’s Mission from 1927 to 1929. Hatendi retired from active ministry in 1955 and passed away in 1968.
