In 1978 Rev. James Kauluma was ordained as the first indigenous bishop of the Anglican Church in Namibia, one of the dioceses of the Province of South Africa. From 1924 on, various European bishops had completed their terms of office in the Diocese of Damaraland, later called the Diocese of Namibia.

Kauluma was born in 1932. He studied for a period of twelve years outside of Namibia, from 1965 to 1977. In 1977, he received a M.Th. degree in the U.S.A. After Bishop Wood’s resignation in 1977, Rev. Kauluma was elected suffragan bishop of the Diocese of Damaraland/Namibia in Windhoek at St. George’s. On January 15, 1978, he was ordained in Westminster Cathedral, London.

In 1979, Bishop Kauluma succeeded Dr. de Vries as chairman of the CCN (Council of Churches in Namibia)(Immanuel Nov-Dec. 1977:app 1, Feb 1978: app 1). In April 1983, Bishop Kauluma received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from General Theological Seminary, New York, U.S.A.

Although retired, Bishop Kauluma is still alive and living in Windhoek.
