Editor’s note: Emails to the Editor dated December 11, 2024 and March 15, 2025 from archivist Jacqueline Burrows tell us a little more about Eugene Willoughby:

I am writing to let you know that Eugene Samuel Willoughby, like several of his peers, was educated at Monkton Combe School, near Bath in Somerset, in 1879. He arrived at the same time as Jacob Vivour Pratt. We don’t have a record of his leaving date but believe he went on to CMS Islington, where he was ordained by Bishop Crowther in 1881.

Monkton School

His life is well documented in this Spotify podcast, although it doesn’t mention the brief term he spent at Monkton Combe before going on to Islington. From about 11+ minutes onwards.
