Nyekindi, Joseph

A Bor Fumbiria, son of Dongo Bilal and Angelina Amena, Joseph Nyekindi was born about 1943 near Kpaile and baptized at Rafili on August 1, 1954. He successfully attended the Minor Seminary at Bussere (1956-1960) and the Major Seminaries at Tore, Kit, Lachor, and Rome, where he got a license in theology and was ordained a priest on May 4, 1969. He worked first in Wau, then was appointed acting rector of the Major Seminary in Juba (1973-1975). He then served in Aweil, Raga, Tonj, was vicar general from 1976 and parish priest of Wau, and vicar capitular in November 1979. He was elected bishop of Wau on November 22, 1980 and consecrated in Wau on February 1, 1981 by Archbishops Moretti, Dud, and Zubeir. In 1991 he temporarily resigned; in 1994 he dedicated himself to the spiritual assistance of the displaced and in November 1995 formally resigned as bishop of Wau. He died in Abiey on November 22, 1996.
