Augusta Maria Zita (1981–2025), affectionately known as Mamã Augusta, was an Angolan woman distinguished by her deep Christian faith, devoted family life, and faithful service within the União de Igrejas Evangélicas de Angola (UIEA). Her life embodied resilience, spiritual commitment, and a profound dedication to both church and community.

Early Life and Background

Augusta Maria Zita was born on January 15, 1981, in Candingo, Municipality of Cuchi, in the former province of Cuando Cubango, Angola. She was the daughter of Agostinho Keke and Amélia Wegile, members of the Cokwe ethnolinguistic group of Bantu origin. Raised in a modest rural household, she grew up grounded in values of faith, diligence, and respect—principles that shaped her character and vocation throughout her life.

Conversion and Spiritual Formation

At the age of fourteen, in 1995, Augusta accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized in December 1997 at the age of sixteen by Pastor Filipe Samba at the Evangelical Church of Tomás in Menongue. Her conversion marked the beginning of a steadfast spiritual journey characterized by active faith and sincere devotion. From that point forward, she committed herself wholeheartedly to Christian service, becoming a model of piety and dedication within her community.

Marriage and Family Life

On September 17, 1997, Augusta married Pastor João Elias in Candingo, establishing a strong and enduring union rooted in love, respect, and faith. Their marriage was blessed with seven children: Margarida Uchine João Elias Buila, Adelaide Ana João Elias, Princesa da Graça Agostinho Elias, Domingas Neusa Agostinho Elias, Bernardo João Agostinho Elias, Melquisedeque Agostinho Elias, and Chimalia Agostinho João Elias. The family was further enriched by four grandchildren: Marclénio Marcelino Jorge, Zimário Elias Sérgio, Teresa Marcelino Jorge, and Elísio Elias Sérgio.

As a wife, Augusta was a faithful companion, supporting her husband’s pastoral ministry through prayer, counsel, and active participation. As a mother and grandmother, she nurtured her family with love and discipline, instilling Christian values such as prayer, honesty, and obedience to Scripture. Her home became a place of faith, hospitality, and spiritual formation.

Education and Personal Development

Demonstrating a strong commitment to personal growth, Augusta began her primary education in 2001 at the Bairro Tomás Primary School, completing it in 2008. She later pursued further studies between 2010 and 2012, completing the first cycle of education (7th grade). In addition, she undertook vocational training in entrepreneurship and pastry-making, which enabled her to contribute to her family’s livelihood and support community and church initiatives.

Theological Training and Calling to Ministry

In 2003, alongside her husband, Augusta discerned a divine calling to pastoral ministry. She enrolled at the Instituto Bíblico de Menongue (IBM), where she completed a Discipleship course and later entered formal training for church workers in 2004. This theological formation deepened her biblical knowledge and strengthened her vocation for ministry.

Ministry and Church Service

Augusta’s ministry was marked by consistent dedication and diverse service. From 1997 to 2002, she served as choir director at the Evangelical Church of Calupassa, a branch of the Church of Tomás in Menongue. She demonstrated remarkable ability in organizing and inspiring worship through music.

Between 2003 and 2006, she served as treasurer of the Women’s Society at the Church of Tomás, distinguished by her integrity, transparency, and responsibility in managing resources. On July 20, 2008, she was commissioned as a church worker in the Northern Region of the UIEA and served in the Evangelical Church of Malanje for approximately fourteen years. During this period, she made a profound impact through her pastoral care and leadership. She served as counselor to the Women’s Department, guiding and supporting women spiritually and emotionally. She visited families, cared for the sick, mentored youth, and assisted those in need with compassion and wisdom.

On June 14, 2023, she was transferred to the Evangelical Church of Viana (South Luanda), where she continued to serve faithfully until her death. Despite her relatively short time there, she left a lasting impression through her dedication and testimony.

Throughout her ministry, Augusta understood leadership not as a position, but as service—expressed through love, care, listening, visitation, intercession, and steadfast support.

Contribution to Church and Mission

Augusta Maria Zita played a significant role in strengthening the ministry of the UIEA. She was instrumental in promoting women’s counseling ministries, both in Malanje and Luanda, becoming a trusted spiritual advisor. She also contributed to evangelistic outreach, supporting preaching points in Catepa, Kizanga, and Kalandula, thereby advancing the mission of the church beyond its physical boundaries.

Her ministry combined pastoral sensitivity with missionary vision, reflecting a holistic understanding of the Gospel as both proclamation and service.

Final Illness and Passing

On June 28, 2025, Augusta began experiencing symptoms of malaria and received treatment at the Catholic Medical Center, showing temporary improvement. However, her condition worsened with persistent pain and weakness. After multiple consultations and treatments in Luanda and Menongue, including care at Clínica Simão Clemente, her health fluctuated without definitive diagnosis.

Despite moments of apparent recovery, her condition deteriorated rapidly. On October 9, 2025, at 5:30 a.m., in the city of Malanje, Augusta Maria Zita died peacefully, answering the call to be with the Lord.

Legacy

The passing of Mamã Augusta left a profound and painful void among her family, church, and community. She is remembered as a woman of unwavering faith, a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, and a compassionate servant of God. Her life remains a testimony of perseverance, humility, and faithful service in the midst of challenges.

Her legacy endures through her family, her ministry, and the many lives she touched—continuing to inspire others to live lives of faith, love, and dedication to God.
